Corwen Walking Festival

The Corwen Walking Festival is held over the weekend of 31/08 - 01/09. There are loads of walks to choose from and the best bit most are Free!!

Corwen is a fantastic venue for this type of event and is a wonderful base for walking enthusiasts as it offers walks from the town that suit all levels of walking. From walks around Corwen itself finding out about the history of the Town to a high level ridge walk along the Berwyn reaching over 800 metres in height the Corwen Walking Festival has it all. We are offering guided walks on both days and you have the choice of doing a full day walk and with some of the shorter walks you could do one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

They also have some daytime skills lectures going on throughout the day and some evening entertainment and Cotswold Outdoor will be on site so you can attend the festival simply to see what is happening in the town itself attend a skills talk and look at the outdoor equipment.

The area around Corwen is in the Clwydian and Dee Valley Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and even from the main car park in the heart of Corwen you can see why. Just looking up you will see the Caer Drewyn hillfort looking down over the town. Corwen is situated on the A5 at one end of the magnificent and majestic Dee Valley.

We have designed an itinerary to visit this great looking walking festival, getting there on the Friday night and leaving on the Sunday night. Squeezing it into a weekend.

The accommodation we have chosen is the Y Llwyn Bed and Breakfast.

Church and Chapel Walk
2 Walks each day
10 Km – 50 metres of ascent
This walk will take you to Corwen Church, Rug Chapel and Llangar Old Parish Church with the option of having a tour of the buildings at each one. Cost of entry to Rug and Llangar which are both CADW properties will be £2.55 per person. You will be able to get refreshments in the Rhug Estate Farmshop on route.
The two tiny religious sites of Rug Chapel and Llangar Old Parish Church together make a big impression. Built in 1637 Rug is a perfect example of a little altered period chapel. Llangar Church is older dating back to 1291 and was originally called Llann-Garw-Gwyn meaning church of the white deer. Never judge a chapel or a church by its exterior. step inside Rug Chapel and be wowed by its decorative flourishes. Colonel William Salesbury it's founder created a private chapel with a zany style to counter puritanical notions of the time. He placed wood carvings and rose motifs everywhere on alter rails, family pews, in the painted gallery, and on bench ends.
Llangar Church is just over a mile away from Rug Chapel and is a few centuries older. It's whitewashed appearance cloaks an amazing interior. Inside wall paintings from 15th Century and later still survive including rather gruesomely an 18th century figure of death.
Corwen Church is the parish church in Corwen and holds the regular services for the town. Legend has it that Owain Glyndwr threw a dagger from Pen Y Pigyn which hit the church and the mark on the stonework can still be seen.
