Otley Walking Festival 27th June - Weeton to Ilkley 17miles

My second walk of the Otley Walking Festival. I chose a long walk for today out of the extensive itinerary.

The leader was John - chairman of the West Yorkshire Long Distance Walkers Association.

We caught the 8am bus from Otley to Weeton (only about 15mins), and then set off up Almscliffe Crag for our first ascent of the day. An easy climb with great views of Wharefdale from the top. We then walked pretty much downhill through open countryside crossing several stiles along the way all the way to Pool.

From here it was uphill to Pool Bank where we picked up a path that took us up into the Chevin. Following the well walked path through the Chevin all the way to Menston, we managed to sneak in a cheeky pint in the dour Menston Arms. From here we picked our way to Ikley moor taking various paths to get there. From here it was easy walking (in the rain!!) along the tops until the Cow and Calf above Ilkley. Here, we made our descent to the bus stop and caught the bus back to Otley.

Overall a good walk and one I have been meaning to do for sometime on my own, but when you have the chance to walk with other people and be shown the way, it seemed too good an opportunity to be missed!

Thanks to Otley Walking Festival and John for the organisation and giving people the chance to get out and walk, For FREE!!

Next for Walking Festivals UK is a short walk on Saturday before the raffle on Sunday.

The next walking festival we will be attending is the Pendle Walking Festival on the 31/08/2013 - too far away!!
